WordPress Wednesday: Implementing Asides in 3 Steps

I always wondered how Mark had those small yellow posts over at Weblog Tools Collection. It was only after a while that I realized that they are what are called Asides. Asides as the name goes is something aside your normal content. I use the asides to link to to posts on which I don’t want to comment much about. However, I feel it valuable to point my visitors towards that link. The Codex article on Asides is the first place to start and proved to me to be a great help when I wanted to implement asides on both […]

More from Picasa Web Albums

A while back I discontinued my self hosted Personal Album. It had become too much of a pain to maintain and I just gave up on it. I’m currently pondering on what option to take. The Google Blog announced that Picasa Web Albums now gives you 1GB space for free. Picasa is Google Image management software. You can view your images, create albums, make minor changes, edit etc. Google recently introduced the online hosting service where you can upload and save your photos. I believe that this 1GB space will probably increase in the future, just as Google did with […]

Software Saturday: PortaPutty

Almost everyone who has SSH access to their accounts will be well aware of PuTTY which is a free Telnet and SSH Client. PuTTY has saved tonnes of time because using shell is a definite time saver over most other methods. If you have just one site to manage, then it isn’t a problem. However, if you have several sites to manage, then over a period of time you would have a lot of sites stored in PuTTY. This is all perfect until you decide to reinstall your Operating System. PuTTY stores the data in the registry, precisely at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSimonTathamPuTTY. […]

Upgrading WordPress via Shell

The word is already out that WordPress 2.1.1 is severely vulnerable and you have to upgrade to WordPress 2.1.2 to keep your blog safe. Since the release of 2.1 we have seen two upgrades in little over a month and upgrading WordPress can be a real pain in the neck. It becomes really bad when you’re talking about upgrading more than one blog. For those who have shell access upgrading WordPress can be a lot less painful and this guide hopes to set you establish just that. I upgraded three installations in less than fifteen minutes. It would have been […]

Has Digg really “unbanned” those banned sites?

It has been observed that previously banned sites don’t appear in the popular lists even now and a good number of new posts that are submitted are landing up in buried lists minutes after they are submitted. Muhammad Saleem tries to seek answers when he asks Has Digg really “unbanned” those banned […]

Digg Should Sue Wired?

Mike Arrington suggests that Digg Should Sue Wired over the “experiment” conducted by Wired Reporter. I disagree totally, because what she did was prove that Digg can still be gamed, despite Digg’s claims that it can’t. The argument […]

So you want to be a Problogger?

Just two days back, Duncan wrote an interesting article on how becoming a professional blogger is a lot more difficult today that it was a few years back. I totally agree with his point of view. There are quite a few people making money through blogging, with some only through blogging. I, for one, still a long way to go before I can think of calling myself a problogger though a good portion of my measly income does come via this route. Daniel over at Daily Blog Tips has put up ten points that every problogger should have. To summarize: Time […]

Where are you’re visitors from?

Alexa Traffic Ranking and Stats has been updated to include country statistics as well as Reach. The stats show me that over 45% of my visitors are from USA, followed by India. On the traffic rank point of view, Denmark seems to top the list where my average traffic rank there is a little over 30,000, with India once gain in second place with 34,000. It is good to see that my blog is visited by users from so many countries 🙂 Are you reading this blog? Which country are you from? Have you checked your stats? Have you observed […]

Gmail is now Open To All

For as long as Gmail has existed, it has been an invite only, which meant that you couldn’t get an account unless you managed to find some kind soul to invite you for one. During the early days invites were rare and you could even find them for sale on eBay. I remember getting my invite from some forum with the condition I had to give back, which I did. Gmail may not be out of beta yet, but the Google Blog announced that it has now been opened up for all users from all over the world. You no […]
