My internet connection has been terrible for the last three days which is the reason why I haven’t had any posts out here. My ISP informs me that of some fiber problem and it will be a few days atleast before it can be fixed. So until I have a decent internet connection, I won’t be able to make any posts until […]
Normally to shutdown Windows, you need to go to you Start Menu » Turn Off Computer » Turn Off I use my keyboard for this purpose by hitting in the shortcut keys, Windows Key followed by U and U. Carol has a tutorial on getting the same thing done by creating a Windows shortcut. You can create a Shortcut on your Desktop (read a similar tutorial) with shutdown -s -t 01 The -s issues the shutdown command and the -t 01 sets the time to one second. You can change the number to something higher if you would like to […]

In the time of progess, India gets ready to take a step forward … or is it back? Citing security concerns, the Department of Telecom (DoT) now plans to bring messenger-based telephony services such as those offered by Skype, Yahoo, MSN, and Net2Phone, under the scanner. However, from what I read this has nothing to do with security concerns. But, Indian ISPs have themselves urged the Government to ban these services or ask them to obtain appropriate licence. And this has come only because VoIP providers don’t pay 12 percent service tax and six percent of their revenue share, as […]
We have always known Windows to be spyware prone. However, one thing that was considered to be without spyware is the Mac. Well, until F-Secure received a proof-of-concept sample of an adware program for Mac OS X. The program doesn’t require administrator rights and it can be silently installed without user intervention. “This is easier to do than with Windows. After all, it’s a Mac.”, says […]
Now that was fast. Hardly a few months earlier Intel had launched the Core2Duo and now we have the Quad-Core Chips reports PC World. The Xeon 5300 and Core 2 Extreme QX6700 chips will deliver speedy performance for the science, entertainment, and business sectors, Intel President Paul Otellini said today in a statement. The Xeon 5300 runs 50 percent faster while drawing the same amount of watts as Intel’s own “Woodcrest” Xeon 5100 chip, and the QX6700 is 80 percent faster than its predecessor, the X6800, Intel said. For the first time such high level of multi-core chips will be […]
I complained about a major bug with this design in Internet Explorer 6. The sidebar kept scrolling to the bottom. I didn’t have IE6 with me and hence was stuck. Tracked down Luminus who spent a good deal of time and bandwidth over his bad internet connection patiently hitting Ctrl+F5 everytime I asked him to. And, I was finally able to debug the problem. For those interested, this was caused because I missed the overflow: hidden in the #content div. Additionally the advertisement to the top was placed within the content div causing the page to be stretched. IE6 got […]
The PlayStation 3 was released in Japan just two days back and Reuters reports that 88,400 units have already been sold! I don’t think even Sony expected such a craze for their gaming console. Unfortunately for them, only 100,000 units were available for launch because of a glitch in blue laser diode production. The PS3 basic model sells at $425. This has a 20GB hard drive. The advanced model with 60GB sells for $510. The PS3 is Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Nintendo’s WII (scheduled for launch on Nov. 19) Sony plans to release the PS3 in North […]
