Now Check your Hotmail / Windows Live Mail Offline
When, I reviewed Postbox a few weeks back, they still hadn’t added support Windows Live Mail / Hotmail. However, in their b8 and subsequently b9 release, one-click integration with Windows Live Mail was added. However, even then, Hotmail required you pay for POP3 access.
Not any more!
The Mail Call blog announced the rollout of POP3 for all users worldwide. I jumped the gun to check out and quickly added my two accounts (one ancient Hotmail and one more recent Live account) to Postbox and did they work fast and smooth.
If you’re not using Postbox, you’ll need to enter the following settings in your POP3 client:
- POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
- POP SSL required? Yes
- User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname @hotmail.com
- Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
- SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
- Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
- TLS/SSL required? Yes
And, these settings work even on your mobile device if you’re interested.
Now, if Yahoo! gets the hint and makes POP3 free for all, I’ll save my 20 bucks a year

7 Steps to Windows Live Mail

Following a link from my friend Gautam’s blog, I landed here.
In seven simple steps he explains how you can signup for Windows Live Mail without an Invite.
Well, it’s not really a true signup because it is just Hotmail powered by Ajax. It is a bit slow to load at first and works only with Internet Explorer.
However, the inteface is rather sleek and very easy to use. But, I still think they have a long way to go before they can actually release it to the public.
It’s still in beta and users who signup are helping MS test this out. Just remember that you need to keep you Location to USA (under Options in Hotmail). You can change it back to your local country once your Live Mail is activated.
