Schibsted launches free classified site Sahipasand in India

Schibsted Classified Media has announced the launch on the Indian market of the free classified ads site Sahipasand.com. The site allows people in India to buy and sell in a wide variety of categories without any cost for the user. On Sahipasand is possible to sell any kind of object, car or pet, but also to buy, sell or rent apartments and houses, find jobs or publish CVs.

According to Schibsted, a big effort is being put into the quality of the service, especially in relation to possible frauds, seen as the biggest potential problem in the free classified business. All the ads are also manually reviewed one by one to reduce low quality ads, duplicates and promotional material.

Instead of the traditional classifieds structure based on categories first, Sahipasand’s homepage asks the user to choose between one of 28 regions. This layout has been designed to improve the user experience and give an incentive to local hand-to-hand exchanges rather than shipping through mail.

At the moment nearly 50,000 ads are present in Sahipasand’s database, but Schibsted’s ambitions are much bigger. According to Schibsted CEO Terje Seljeseth: “This battle is not about who else we should beat. It’s more about the transformation of the advertising networks and how the market develops. You should keep in mind that the gross domestic product of India is about four times the on of Norway. I guess that says something about the technological development in the country. This effort is a little different than what we have done previously in Europe.

Sahipasand is based on a platform originally developed for the Swedish site Blocket, the fifth largest website in Sweden, and is part of the Schibsted Classified Media network, which includes sites based on the Blocket platform in more than 20 countries.

The launch of a new site in a nation as densly populated as India is a new direction in Schibsted Classified Media strategy, which up until now has concentrated mostly on smaller countries with a higher internet usage. With a population of nearly 1.2 billion and an estimated 71 millions internet users, India is considered by the Norwegian company to be a market with huge potential in regards to future growth.

Inside Adsense reports that Adsense is now available for web-based games.

As a beta user of AdSense for Games, you can display video ads, image ads, or text ads within your online games to earn revenue. You’ll be able to show these ads in placements you define, such as interstitial frames before a game, after a level change, or when a game is over. Members of our AdWords team will sell your in-game ad placements directly to top brand advertisers, and you’ll also see contextually targeted text and image ads based on content and demographic information.

How do you qualify?
Eligible publishers must have a minimum of 500,000 game plays per day and have 80% of their traffic from the U.S. or the U.K.

For more information, visit the Google Games site.

Five Advertising Programs to Monetize your site/blog (Money Monday)

So, who doesn’t want to make money? The internet has great scope for making money and here are a few ways you can do so.

Google Adsense

Everyone knows Adsense and a good number of people use it. Adsense is one of my favorite programs and serves as my primary sources of revenue. You can paid for clicks on your advertisements. However, it must be warned that Google is very strict about you clicking on your own ads. You also make money by allowing advertisers to advertise in your feeds or by adding Google Search to your blog.

Text Link Ads

TLA is my second favorite program and I have it implemented on all my sites. You are paid to display text links on your blogs / sites / blog posts. TLA shares 50% of the revenue with you. WordPress blogs have the option of displaying a single text ad in the feed.

Kontera

Kontera is the third advertising program I use. Kontera allows in-text advertising. Text on your blog is converted into clickable links. On hovering over these links, users see a small popup that displays information about the link. Clicking these links earns you money.

Performancing Ads

Performancing Ads is a new offering that allows advertisers to place 125×125 advertisements on your blog. You can also promote your other sites by displaying their 125×125 banners on your other sites.

OIOpublisher

OIOpublisher is an ad platform with a focus on performance, control and ease of use. Serve advertising on your blog or website and keep 100% of the revenue you bring in. You install the plugin on your WordPress blog and you can then sell advertising. The plugin supports a wide variety of formats including banners and links.

There are a numerous programs available online besides the five above. I’ve listed these because I use them on some site or the other. What are you doing to make money?

It’s ok to search your own site with AdSense for search, but…

Google Adsense

Many bloggers and site owners have Google Adsense for Search installed on their blogs. This ensures that you can provide relevant results to your blog users while simultaneously making some money on the side.

While, there is no issue with other users using the search box, however, the question arises on the legality of you using the same.

In a post on the Inside Adsense blog, Arlene Lee of Adsense Publisher Support has clarified that it is ok to search your own site with Adsense for search.

However, she strongly advises against using the same, simply because the probability of you clicking on your own ads increases tremendously, which will result in invalid clicks. You also increase the number of search query hits in the statistics.

If you would like to search your blog, then use the Google Toolbar, or even your inbuilt blog search.

You can use Google to search for your results in your site by using the site: keyword. e.g. to search within this site, I use site:techtites.com followed by the search query.
