Last week, Microsoft owned Sysinternals released a new virtual desktop management software called Desktops.

Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys.

At a 62KB, Desktops is a small and quick to use software that gets the job done. The software doesn’t require installation and can be run from even a USB drive. The memory footprint too is small.

However, in a bid for simplicity several basic features have been lost.

Firstly, I found no way to exit the software. If there was one then it definitely wasn’t quick to find.

Next, it took quite a while to create the desktops the first time as well as to switch to them other times.

And, it didn’t duplicate tray icons.

For the size and the memory usage this is well worth using. If you are looking for features, then you may need alternatives.
