Tip Thursday: Disable UAC in Windows Vista

I just received my new Dell Laptop today and it came preloaded with Windows Vista. The first thing I noticed (and ofcourse which I knew about) was the User Account Control. User Account Control is a brand new feature in Windows Vista that lets all users to run in normal user mode without administrator privileges; something that Linux has had for quite a while now. The good thing about this is to prevent users from messing up the PC. But, if you are the only PC user, it can get quite a bit of a pain in the neck! Here’s…

Firefox 2.0.0.3 is now yours

Firefox 2.0.0.3 is now available for download. The Mozilla site lists the reason for upload to be a single security issue. The issue isn’t considered very critical by itself, but it does have the potential to find vulnerable machines on a network. There are still quite a few bugs that need to be fixed including a problem with Vista not loading certain sites, so expect a new release soon. Download Firefox 2.0.0.3 for Windows or for other platforms and languages.

WordPress Wednesday: Implementing Asides in 3 Steps

I always wondered how Mark had those small yellow posts over at Weblog Tools Collection. It was only after a while that I realized that they are what are called Asides. Asides as the name goes is something aside your normal content. I use the asides to link to to posts on which I don’t want to comment much about. However, I feel it valuable to point my visitors towards that link. The Codex article on Asides is the first place to start and proved to me to be a great help when I wanted to implement asides on both…

Tool Tuesday: WinPatrol

My past years of experience in maintaining computers, both of mine and my friends has taught me that people are not very aware of SpyWare. Agreed that this is a lot better than a few years back when spyware was just beginning to raise its ugly head. We have several spyware tools (which I shall look at in the coming weeks) that will work wonders after the spyware has infected your PC. However, what is really needed is a tool that prevents the infection in the first place. One such tool is WinPatrol.

Are you using the Official Plugins Directory?

The WordPress Blog announced the release of the official Plugin Directory. Currently the primary place I use to look for plugins is WP-Plugins.net. It is updated several times a day as plugin authors use it as the first place to announce their plugins. They also have a feed which you can subscribe to. The new plugins directory is actually an interface to WP-Plugins.org which for years has served as a hosting place for several plugins. I too have few of my plugins hosted out there, but stopped maintaining them because I couldn’t track their downloads and it also meant another…

Service Saturday: Grazr

Feeds have changed the way we read information on the web today. I am subscribed to approximately 200 feeds, most of which I “read” every single day. To read feeds, you usually need a feed reader. But what if you want to share the feeds you read with the world. What if you want to display it on your blog or website? You would need some kind of script that would fetch the feed and display it. What if there are several feeds? I like to keep the “dirty” work off my hands as much as possible and let somebody…

Fun Friday: Yahoo! Friend

Chatting is something most of us indulge in. It serves as a great way to keep in touch, discuss things and communicate with our relatives and friends. One of my favorite chat clients is Yahoo! Messenger. It comes equipped with a fantastic set of emoticons and audibles and usually I wouldn’t bother about getting anything else. However, recently I came across Yahoo! Friend.
