Techtites Daily: Multimedia Monday

Midi files have a variety of uses. You can play them on your computer, your cellphone and your synthesizer. Unfortunately, you still can’t play them on your music player.

What if you’re a musician and have created that beautiful piece and saved it in midi. How, do you spread it to people who prefer using a music player? The only option you have then is to convert it to an audio CD or an MP3 CD.

There are a lot of free softwares available for converting mp3 files to wav and vice versa.

A midi file can’t be converted before your sound card reads it, because midi files need to be interpreted with your sound card’s midi instruments.

I’ve always struggled to find a good free midi to mp3 converter, until I stumbled upon MidiMeow

MidiMeow

MidiMeow converts the file by playing it through your sound card, so you will need to fiddle around with the settings in case you have a “silent” mp3 or wav.

Using the program is extremely simple. In the In box you select the Midi file you want to convert, while in the Out box you select the output file. You can choose the output type from wav, mp3 and ogg, as well as the bitrate for the file.

The other settings help you tweak the output.

Conversion does take a while if you have a lot of files to convert, so you just have to be patient.

MidiMeow unfortunately has been made shareware from v1.02 onwards. However, versions below that are still freeware. The site also states that 1.02 can be used for free and you have to register only if you want to use new options.
