Beware: Potential vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Acrobat

In a recent Security Advisory, Adobe has stated that a critical vulnerabilty in an ActiveX Control used in Internet Explorer could allow malicious hackers to use Adobe’s Reader and Acrobat software to launch PC hijack attacks

Affected software versions

Adobe Reader, Acrobat Standard and Professional 7.0.0 through 7.0.8 on the Windows platform when using Internet Explorer.

Solution

  • Exit Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader.
  • Browse to <volume>:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX. Note: If you did not install Acrobat to the default location, browse to the location of your Acrobat 7.0 folder.
  • Select AcroPDF.dll and delete it.

An update is planned in the near future.
You can now download the new AcroPDF.dll and replace the old one. However, it is recommended that you upgrade to Acrobat Reader 8.

Please delete AcroPDF.dll immediately to ensure that your computer remains safe. There are no known reports yet of any exploit using this vulnerability.
