With the latest Google Earth update in addition to a lot of Paid features being free, you also have an interesting bonus in the form of David Rumsey Historical Map Collection.

The World overlayed with a Rumsey Historical Map

Sixteen maps have been added which you can use to overlay the world. You can modify the transperancy levels of the same and compare the old with the new.

It looks really cool and the color is fantastic. However, it is only useful if you live in those particular regions where the maps are available.

Out here in India it may still take a while before a decent detailed map is available.

Well, it’s fun for a while ;)
